Foreword

Dauge (Published online: 4 December 2007)
This volume contains the proceedings of the
Journées d'analyse fonctionnelle et numérique
en l'honneur de Michel Crouzeix
held in Guidel (Brittany, France) June 2-3, 2006, as a satellite conference of Canum 2006.
On the first of October 2005, Michel Crouzeix retired from his teaching and administrative duties at the University of Rennes 1.
On this occasion,
Michel's close colleagues have wished to honor him with a short international workshop.
Michel Crouzeix spent his whole career at the University of Rennes 1. He got a position of
chargé d'enseignement de
mathématiques in October 1974, and in August 1979 he became Professor. Since then, he animated research both in the
Mathematics Laboratory at the University and in the framework of an INRIA project at IRISA. Another important achievement is his
involvement as head of the laboratory and his contribution to the creation of the mathematics department of the
Antenne de
Bretagne de l'École Normale Supérieure de Cachan. Presently he is Professeur Émérite.
For 30 years, Michel Crouzeix has contributed to the life of the French numerical analysis community. His ideas, often
disseminated through international collaborations and the work of his students, have influenced the development of many
subjects in the intersection of functional analysis and numerical analysis, from finite element and integral equation methods
to ordinary differential equations and evolution problems. The
Journées brought together scientists from France and
all around the world to discuss these areas. It was organised around 12 invited plenary lectures by international experts, most
of whom happen to be collaborators, colleagues, or former students of Michel Crouzeix. The full program of these days is given below.
The scientific committee of the workshop consisted of Marc Briane (INSA de Rennes), Gabriel Caloz, Martin Costabel, Monique Dauge
(Université de Rennes 1), Philippe Chartier, Bernard Philippe (INRIA-IRISA), Michel Pierre (Antenne de Bretagne de l'ENS Cachan).
The organization was ensured by the numerical analysis team of the IRMAR, UMR-CNRS 6625.
As chairman and chairwoman of the organizing committee, we accepted to be editors of a volume in ESAIM Proceedings
dedicated to this workshop. Speakers were encouraged to submit a contribution and the present volume gathers the eight papers
which have been contributed.
Finally we would like to thank the following institutions for their financial support:
- Université de Rennes 1,
- École Normale Supérieure de Cachan,
- INRIA-IRISA,
- Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Rennes,
and the collectivités locales
- Rennes Métropole,
- Conseil général de l'Ille et Vilaine,
