The Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SMAI) was founded in 1983 on the initiative of French applied mathematicians realizing the specific nature of their discipline and keen to ensure its spreading and development.
The aim of the non-profit Society SMAI is to contribute to the development of applied mathematics through research, business applications, publications, education, as well as research and engineering training.
This year, the SMAI congress (27-30 may 2013, Seignosse, France) will be an opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the association.
The following journals are published by EDP Sciences under the scientific leadership of SMAI:

The European Series in Applied and Industrial Mathematics (ESAIM) was founded in 1995 by the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI), with the support of the French Ministry of National Education and Research.
Initially the series comprised three electronic journals:
- ESAIM: COCV (Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations),
- ESAIM: P&S (Probability and Statistics)
- and ESAIM: Proceedings.
In 1999, the journal RAIRO-Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis (M2AN), which is also published under the auspices of the SMAI, was integrated into the ESAIM series (ESAIM: M2AN).
